My Testimony
byLet me start by saying that I like others know this Church is true, that we have the fullness of the gospel, that the Book Of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith is a true prophet Of God, and that he did translate the Book Of Mormon.
Let me start from the begging. I have always been a member of the LDS Church and active most of my life. When I was young, about 16 or 17, my girlfriend and I went to Temple Square in Salt Lake, and I was in the visitors center listening to the story of Joseph Smith about when he prayed in the grove, asking God which Church is true. I got such a warm and peaceful felling over me that testified to me that what I was then hearing was true, that Joseph is a true prophet of God, and that he saw God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. The Holy Ghost bore testimony to me that it was true through a warm and peaceful feeling I felt throughout my whole body.
I fell away from Church while serving in the military because of my own human weakness. In approximately 1984 two Missionaries came knocking on our door and invited us back to Church. It took a few weeks before I was able to overcome the temptations not to go. Let me say this: before I went back to Church, I smoked and drank. When we did go back it was Fast Sunday. I was with my boys, but my wife was at work. As we sat there such a warm and peaceful spirit came over me. I knew that this is where my family and I belonged. This spirit gave such peace to my heart that it was impossible to reject. After the first week, I quit smoking! As we returned each week that same spirit was there every week, testifying to me that this is the true Church, that we as members of the LDS Church have the fullness of the gospel. I then started reading the Book of Mormon and could not put it down! Once again that sweet spirit testified to me that the Book Of Mormon is true, that it was translated by Joseph Smith, that he did have all the visions that he has claimed, and that he is a prophet of God.
I was still active in the military and in 1995 I retired after 20 years of service. I fell a way yet again, because I was weak, and I started smoking again. I did my best to stay active and talked to my bishop about it all. Even though I had fallen away, I had told myself that I CAN NEVER deny that I know Christ lives, that this the LDS Church is true, that the Book of Mormon is true, and that we have a living prophet on this earth! Well, after 12 years of inactivity I am happy to report I went back to Church. I knew someday that would happen. I went back just a couple of months ago. However, I still know, with out a shadow of a doubt in my heart, through that warmth and peaceful spirit that guides me, that Jesus is the Christ, that He lives, that we have the fullness of the gospel on this earth today, that Gordon B. Hinckley is a true Prophet of God, and that the Book of Mormon is true.
