Mormon, an ancient American prophet, compiled the records of his people into the Book of Mormon.
Hi friend. Mormon was an ancient American prophet called by God. He belonged to a group of people called the Nephites who lived in the Americas for many centuries. Unfortunately, this people was eventually destroyed around 400 A.D. Prior to their destruction, the prophet Mormon collected all the written histories of his people's interactions with God and summarized them in a single book. Today, this book has been translated into many languages and is called the Book of Mormon.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes the Book of Mormon is a book of sacred scripture, like the Bible. Because we believe in the Book of Mormon, some anti-Mormons in the XIX century began to call us "Mormons," which was meant to be a derogatory term. Unfortunately for them, we rather liked the nickname! That's why members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are sometimes called Mormons today. Hope this answer helps.

It's a body of water discussed in the Book of Mormon.
The name was given to at least one man, who just happened to be the historian/prophet who compiled the whole Book of Mormon. Mormon took and read the record and God, through the Holy Ghost, prompted Mormon to include parts of those records to warn, give counsel, and testify that Jesus is the Christ to people living in our day.
