I’ve made such a terrible mistake! I broke the law of chastity, and I feel just terrible. And now I’ve gone inactive, making the situation even worse. Can I ever be forgiven? Can I still be married in the temple? Can I still wear white on my wedding day? (Adapted from a question posted in Spanish. )

Through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we can be freed from our sins.
Hi Martha. You're right in thinking that sexual sin is very serious. However, there is no sin that can place you beyond the reach of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, you can certainly recover spiritually! The first step is to start going to church every week so you can be nurtured by the good word of God. I suggest that you request a visit from the Mormon missionaries. I'm certain they could help you come back to the church.

Once you come back to the church, I suggest you schedule a visit with your bishop. Explain to him that you made a terrible mistake and that you want to begin the process of spiritual recovery. He'll be happy to help you apply Christ's atonement in your life. He'll be eager to help you.

With some hard work on your part, you could still prepare yourself to be married in the temple. The key is that you must complete the repentance process. In temple weddings, the man and woman always wear their white temple clothes regardless of past sins. Once someone repents, the Lord remembers the sin no more. Hope this answers helps!

My heart hurts for you. It sounds to me like you are repentant. As you complete the process of repentance with your bishop, you will begin to heal. Although the sin is washed away, you will have remembrance of the pain. This helps us resolve to be better and never return to that dark pain again. For one who has also felt the pain of sin, I testify of the joy in forgiveness!

Never forget the Lord doesn't ever ever give up on us. The big problem is only when we give up on ourselves. As we study the scriptures we see examples over and over of the Lord's chosen people sinning, humbling themselves, and returning to the full blessings on the gospel.

The Lord knows your heart. Just come back to him!
