I read this thirty five years ago and can’t remember who said it, hope someone can remind me.

A person who lives in the city can work out their salvation quicker than can a man who lives in the country.

The idea being that a city man encounters more people more often and thus has more oppertunities for error or for good than a country man.

Hi J. Clark. Thanks for your message. I've never heard the quote you mentioned, and it doesn't seem very compatible with the gospel I know. Our church doesn't see encountering/meeting "more people more often" as a moral danger. On the contrary, our missionary program and emphasis on being good neighbors encourages friendships with all sorts of diverse people.

I'm also not entirely comfortable with the phrase "working out their salvation" either, though I know some members of the church sometimes use it. I worry that it gives people the wrong idea about our beliefs, suggesting that we think we can earn salvation independent of Jesus Christ. Anyway, I know that's not what you meant. Just wanted to comment for the benefit for others who see this question and might not understand our "mormonese"! :)

Hope all is well.
