Hi friend. Priesthood is the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that the ancient priesthood had among the members of Christ's early church was restored through Joseph Smith in our days.

There are two priesthoods. One, called the Aaronic Priesthood, is a preparatory priesthood that prepares male members for the higher, or Melchizedek, Priesthood. Young men usually receive the Aaronic Priesthood when they turn twelve years old. As a holder of the Aaronic Priesthood, young men can bless and pass the sacrament and visit members of the church as Home Teachers. Older Aaronic priesthood holders can also baptize.

When young men turn 18, they generally receive the Melchizedek priesthood. This is the priesthood required to preside in church meetings, to bless the sick, and to serve as a missionary.

When an adult man joins the church, he often receives the Aaronic priesthood within a few months of his baptism, and the Melchizedek priesthood some months later. Hope this answer helps.
