Many Christians mistakenly interpret scriptures like Psalm 51:5 to mean that children are born sinful, that they inherit sin from father Adam. In reality, this interpretation is not correct. The Jews themselves, the people who wrote the Old Testament, did not believe in original sin, nor did the earliest Christians. The concept of original sin was first developed centuries after Christ's death by men named Irenaeus and Augustine of Hippo.

Mormons believe that little children are innocent from birth, that they do not inherit sin from father Adam. Sinfulness is only possible as men and women choose to act contrary to God's will. Little children cannot make any choices. We believe in the Bible, specifically Ezekiel 18:20, which states: "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him."

From Pearl of Great Price | Articles of Faith. The articles of faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
