My Mormon boyfriend and I have been together since I was 14, and I will be 17 in August (so almost 3 years). I am planning on converting while he is away on his mission, and we want to get married in the temple. How does a temple marriage work? And would it be acceptable to have another ceremony for my non-LDS family?

The concept of a united family that lives and progresses forever is at the core of Latter-day Saint doctrine.
Hi friend. I'm happy you're interested in joining the LDS Church! Being a member of this Church has been a great blessing in my life.
Temple marriage is one of the best blessings that come from being a member of the "Mormon Church." Knowing that you can be together forever with your beloved spouse does a lot to strengthen a marriage. I recently wrote an article describing my own temple marriage that you might find interesting. Temple marriage requires a lot of preparation; usually new converts spend a year getting ready for the sealing ordinance.
It's a very good idea to have some sort of ceremony outside the temple if you have family members who don't belong to the Church. In the U.S., the legal marriage needs to be performed in the temple, but a ring-bearing ceremony or a wedding reception outside the temple would be very appropriate.

Temple ceremonies are sacred and simple... I feel if you are serious you probably should take the first step and talk to a missionary... Make sure your parents know what you are planning on doing so they can authorize your baptism if you're a minor.
Besides you are only 16! Enjoy your being 16, and in fact that joy may be more social and pleasurable if you were associated with the LDS faith, youth groups... So YUP.. Talk to the missionaries and your parents. (And don't try to grow up too fast ;)
