Hi guys. My boyfriend is a very handsome Mormon. He’s already on his two-year mission. I feel good about it because I wouldn’t want to have gotten in the way of his future. I don’t know very much about his beliefs but I’m willing to wait for him. We’ve talked about marriage and starting a family when he comes back, but I belong to another religion and my family doesn’t approve our relationship. But I love him. I don’t really care what other people think.
Would I have to convert to Mormonism for us to get married? I want our love to last forever. Thanks.
The Church’s missionary program is one of its most recognized characteristics.
Hi friend. I'm happy your boyfriend is serving a mission. I was a missionary in my younger years as well. It was a foundational experience that helped me become the person I am today.
Spiritual unity is very important in a marriage. This is especially true of Mormons. Studies conducted in the United States have shown that Mormons who marry other Mormons in a Mormon temple have remarkably low rates of divorce. In contrast, when Mormons marry those of other faiths, their divorce rates are among the highest recorded. I'm not saying that it's inevitable that you and your boyfriend will end up divorcing, but it is almost certain that the difference in religion will cause challenges.
You mentioned that you don't know much about your boyfriend's beliefs. Given the personal spiritual blessings that come from being a member of this church and the importance of religious unity in marriage, I strongly encourage you to learn more about your boyfriend's faith. I know that God could touch your heart, helping you understand the truthfulness of this work, if you study, pray, and participate in our worship services.
