Hi Daniel. In the LDS Church, missionary work is voluntary. Except in cases of extreme poverty, missionaries usually pay for their own missions rather than receiving money from the Church, so a mission is clearly not the same as a job or a course. Once missionaries return from their missions, they usually resume their regular lives. They study, work, and get married just like anyone else would. Mormons usually prepare financially for marriage in much the same way that others prepare. Regarding your second question, missionaries do not typically receive any diploma for their missionary service. The only "payment" is the good memories and excellent experience that comes from serving God for two years.
