I’m a member of the church together with five other members of my family. My husband reads a lot but doesn’t put anything into practice. He doesn’t apply the principles in his life. What can I do?

Hi Jaramillo. It's very difficult when people we love don't live up to gospel standards. While we can never force anyone to do the right thing, there are some things we can do to help. Here are some suggestions:
  • Pray and fast that your husband's heart will be softened. Perhaps your children could also fast and pray for him. In a very kind and delicate way, let him know that you are praying and fasting for him.
  • While you obviously can't control his behavior, be careful not to enable him. For example, he may choose to drink alcohol, but you should not feel obligated to purchase beer for him when you go grocery shopping. He may choose not to go to church on Sunday, but you shouldn't feel obligated to go inactive yourself in order to accommodate his schedule. Be firm but loving.
  • Perhaps you've already discussed the situation with him. If not, it could be that your husband doesn't fully understand how important having a spiritually united family is to you. In a nonconfrontational way, sit down with him and try to help him understand your spiritual needs.
  • Try to be a good example for your husband. Try your best to go to church every Sunday, to read the scriptures daily, and to pray regularly. I know one woman who was a faithful member of the church for many years before her husband finally decided to become a member. Her patient example worked miracles.
Hope this helps! May God bless you as you try to help your husband. Regardless of your success, God will honor your efforts.
