I have a lot of doubts. I’m going to get married in two months and my future husband doesn’t want us to use any birth control. He said he prefers total abstinence because he allegedly learned in the temple that birth control should be avoided and he wants to do things right. I also want to do things right, and that’s why we’re going to be sealed in the temple. But his view seems very drastic to me. He said we can only ask this question to the temple president and his wife. Any suggestions?

Hi Belén. I'm very happy to hear that you and your fiancé want to do the right thing. I think we all agree that children are a blessing and that it's more important to do the right thing than to do the easy thing. That's the life of a disciple of Christ.

However, in this case your fiancé is misinformed. Nowhere in the temple are we taught not to use birth control. In fact, many members of the church do use birth control because church policy does allow it. On the other hand, abstinence in marriage is in most cases very destructive and so is discouraged.

There's no reason to speak with the temple president regarding birth control because church policies in this case are not ambiguous. In the past, birth control may have been discouraged, but God has revealed through more recent prophets and apostles that members should be free to plan their families using birth control if they so desire. I hope this answer helps. Good luck.
