I’m very interested in the church and am thinking about being baptized. I have a lot of doubts, though. How can I find out what is really true?

Hi friend.

I'm very happy to hear that you are investigating the church. So many people try to find happiness in the wrong places. They think that if they have more money, more beauty, or more influence, they will be happier. I think it's excellent that you have discovered that true happiness doesn't come from the things of the world. It comes when we try to grow closer to God. I know I have grown closer to Him as I've worshiped Him in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I think it's normal to have some doubts when you're making such an important decision that can have such a huge impact on your life. I'm confident that as God continues to work in your heart, you will be able to overcome these doubts.

To learn the truth directly from God, follow two important steps. First, spend some time studying. In your case, studying about the church certainly includes going to church every Sunday, reading the scriptures, learning more about Mormon culture from your Mormon friends, and spending time contemplating the beautiful gospel truths that you've been learning.

After you've studied your question in your mind, the next step is to ask God to give you further light. Prayer is a powerful tool for learning truth directly from God. If God doesn't answer your question right away, continue to study it further. Prayer is not something we should do only once. God our Heavenly Father is anxious to hear from us; we should pray frequently.

Many people think that God will answer their prayer with some amazing miracle or a great vision. On rare occasions, God can send miracles and visions, but usually He sends the Holy Ghost to whispers to our hearts, as if it were a still small voice.

In the Bible, there is a wonderful story about the prophet Elijah. Elijah goes up on a high mountain to talk to God. A strong wind passes by, but God is not in the wind. Then comes an earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake. Next a fire, but God is not in the fire. Finally, Elijah hears a still small voice, the quiet voice of God in his heart (1 Kings 19:11-12).

The still small voice that God sends is not really a voice at all. It's not something that we can hear. Rather, God whispers feelings of peace and love to our hearts. When we feel God's influence in our hearts, we can know the truth of all things.

You can read more about how to receive and interpret God's message on this site.

May God bless you as you continue to search for His truth.
