Hi brothers and sisters. I’m 18 years old, and I’ve decided to go on a mission, but there’s something that’s really bothering me. Eight years ago I broke the word of wisdom because I drank some alcohol. Recently I was reading the Scriptures, and I read a verse that says that we need to be worthy to preach the gospel. I haven’t confessed my sin to my Bishop. I’m worried because he thinks very highly of me.

Also, lately I’ve been going on dates with a number of young men, and we’ve had some rather passionate kisses. I worry about my worthiness to preach the gospel. Please help me. What should I do?

Missionaries: An Introduction.
Hi sister. I'm happy you want to serve a mission. It's been over 10 years since I returned from my full-time mission, and I still think about how wonderful it was to serve the Lord that way. I hope your desire to serve continues to grow!

I suggest you talk with your bishop about breaking the Word of Wisdom. For us Mormons who know about the Word of Wisdom, drinking alcohol is a serious sin. It's good that you haven't broken this commandment recently, though. Your bishop will certainly take that into account in determining how best to help you on the path to full repentance.

I suggest you be very careful with passionate kissing, especially since you'll be leaving on a mission soon. Satan will be tempting you, sister, trying to get you to abandon your missionary plans. Kissing is not itself sinful, but passionate kissing can certainly lead to serious sin. I suggest you pray for guidance. The bishop can also give you some good counsel.

I hope this answer helps. Best of luck to you with your missionary preparations!
