We have been asked to do just that, and the majority of the LDS population I believe does. The only ones that do not usually don't because of medical problems preventing them from a proper fast... Of course that is a fast from food.

Sometimes if people are not able to fast from food they can fast from other worldly things in their life. I once and for several months fasted from the computer for a week at a time as my fast.

The church asks all worthy members of the church at years of acountability to fast from two meals a month and then give to fast offerings the money that you would have spent on the meal. This is done to help to provide monies for the poor in the congregation.

More can be read at lds.org if you search out the word fast

Thanks, Richard, for your great information. Some members also choose to fast at other times. Fasting combined with sincere prayer can strengthen us spiritually, bring us closer to God, and help us prepare ourselves and others to receive his blessings. It also helps to develop self-control, commune with the Lord, and gain spiritual strength and power.

It is interesting that studies show that many health benefits can come from fasting as well.

The other way to respond to your question is the focus on the aspect of fasting on the first Sunday of each month. An excellent discussion of this can be found in the artcile "I Have a Question," Ensign, Mar 1998, 60–61.
