I work with a bunch of LDS girls and they treat me differently because I am catholic, they don’t know that but they know I am not them. I got my hours cut recently at work for it being slow for me and the others got their hours increased and pay raises. That is not fair, I don’t know what to do… Any suggestions?

Hi friend. I'm sorry to hear your relationship with your Mormon coworkers is strained. Unfortunately, I've noticed that people have a natural tendency to congregate with those who have similar beliefs and worldviews. That natural tendency is very unfortunate; having many diverse friends can greatly enrich a person's life. I myself have been excluded from some social circles because of my Mormon beliefs. It's a terrible feeling, and I sincerely sympathize with you.

In one of our recent General Conferences, Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the Church at the time, said, "Let us as Latter-day Saints reach out to others not of our faith... may we show love and respect and helpfulness toward them. We are greatly misunderstood, and I fear that much of it is of our own making. We can be more tolerant, more neighborly, more friendly, more of an example than we have been in the pastÂ…"

I wish your Mormon coworkers could follow the counsel of their ecclesiastical leaders. Unfortunately, we all fall short of our own ideals from time to time. I encourage you to continue to be friendly. Perhaps it would even be appropriate to express some of your feelings to your Mormon co-workers in a non-confrontational way. Hopefully in time you'll be able to win them over.

The claim that you have been denied work hours or a pay raise because of your religious beliefs is very serious. It is quite common for apparently unfair situations like these to arise independent of religion. For example, when my wife worked in retail, she found herself in a similar situation, but it had nothing to do with her religion. If you do have concrete evidence that you've suffered religious-based discrimination, I encourage you to speak with your company's human resources representative. That kind of discrimination is obviously inappropriate, and I don't condone it in the slightest.

Sorry that your work is going poorly. The economy we are in is very challenging.

I think it's likely that your LDS coworkers don't have anything to do with your financial situation. If you feel that they do then take your concerns to the management and if you feel they are still acting in some way unfair you can always go to a government agency, like the BBB and get them to investigate it.

If there is some form of unfairness going on even LDS companies need to obey the law, the church does, they follow the laws of the land and in fact that is one of our Articles of Faith.
