I’d like to belong to your church, but I’ve heard that you don’t let women work. Is that true? It’s that I’m a medical student and I would never want to give up my career. Obviously I want to dedicate my time to God and I want to one day have a family, but I’d like to find a balance between God, my family, and my work. Please answer me.

Hi again Alejandra. I'm also a medical student, so I understand your situation. For Mormons, family is very important. Both men and women are encouraged to put their families first. We're taught that no success can compensate for failure in the home. Women who choose not to work so they can raise their children full time are honored in our culture, since we think motherhood is the most important job of all.

However, often times both a mother and a father need to work for the family to survive. Additionally, mothers can often find work that is compatible with raising children. For example, many women work while their children are in school or when they are older and no longer need constant attention. Mormons definitely do not prohibit women from working. One study conducted in 1985 showed that Mormon women in the United States are more likely to be employed in professional occupations than Catholics or Protestants.

Look up the person Sheri Dew as well as the leaders of the Relief Society and the Young Women on http://www.lds.org

The brethren have stated before how when the women of the church join their meetings the church becomes complete. Women do not detract from the overall order and beauty of the church. To the contrary, without the women of the church, our church would have failed moving west during the days of persecutions.
