Were animal sacrifices performed in the Salt Lake temple in pioneer times? Will sacrifices be performed there in the future? What book do you recommend to better understand this? My second question is, given that a couple is sealed in the temple, lives in total honesty, attends the temple, serves others, etc., is there another type agreement/ordinance that is only available to the very best married couples? (Question originally written in Spanish)

The San Diego temple in San Diego, California.
Hi friend. Animal sacrifices were never performed in the Salt Lake Temple. Though the Old Testament describes animal sacrifices performed in ancient Israelite temples, mormons, like other Christians, believe that those kinds of sacrifices are no longer necessary because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. There are no historical books addressing this topic because people don't typically write historical books about things that never happened. :)
An ordinance called the "second anointing" was common in the early years of the church. Thousands of men and women received this ordinance in mormon temples. However, by 1949 the second anointing had been practically discontinued. There are rumors that this sacred ordinance was subsequently revived but is now performed only rarely; however, I think it is likely that for most couples the second anointing will be performed only after the resurrection. There are many wonderful, worthy couples who have not received the second anointing. Indeed, it is likely that the ordinance is no longer performed at all, and that no couple on earth, regardless of worthiness, currently receives it. Hope this answer helps.
