Why is polygamy a sin if in the beginning of the church it wasn’t seen that way? God’s Commandments are always the same, aren’t they? I hope you can answer my question. Thank you.

Hi Persita. In fact God's commandments are not always the same. God is unchanging, but human cultures are constantly evolving. God certainly does modify the way He guides His people, according to their changing needs.

The Law of Moses provides the perfect example of this principle. Many of the commandments God gave to the ancient Israelites were no longer required in the Christian era.

For reasons known only to God, He has in the past commanded and/or permitted polygamy. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Old Testament practiced polygamy, for example. For well over a century now, God has made it clear that polygamy is no longer acceptable. Any member of the church who is practicing polygamy is excommunicated.

I hope this answer helps!

One of our Articles of Faith states "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law." The laws of many countries prohibit polygamy.
