Temples are considered houses of God, places of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world.
Hi friend. Many people confuse Mormon chapels and Mormon temples. Mormon chapels are modest buildings were church members congregate each week to worship God. Mormons are eager to help others visit their chapels. A "Visitors Welcome" sign appears in front of most of these chapels, and we have 50,000 missionaries worldwide who try to help people visit and worship with us.
Mormon temples are different kinds of buildings. In temples, Mormons perform private ceremonies (ordinances) that are profound and personal. In harmony with the Mormon concept of uniting sacred space, sacred practices, and sacred teachings, entrance into a Mormon temple requires quite a bit of preparation. Mormons are eager to help anyone begin this preparatory process. We'd love to fill the world with temples so everyone could enjoy the rich spiritual blessings that can be found therein. However, because Temple worship involves a good deal of preparation, it's not possible to just casually enter one of our temples. Both Mormons and others need to be spiritually prepared first.
I hope this answer helps.

The Blessings of the Temple
Before a new temple is dedicated, there are open houses that anyone can attend In order to have a tour of the building. Once the temple is dedicated, only prepared members (members who have been interviewed by church leaders and carry a card called a Temple Recommend) can worship inside.
However, in every temple there is a waiting room near the lobby. Anyone can enter there. There are usually scriptures, religious books and magazines, and spiritual videos that be read or watched. As well, anyone can visit the grounds of the temple. Some larger temples have special visitor's centres that host art displays, informational displays, and other items, and anyone can also visit those. The church also puts on several musical pageants each year and has many historic sites. A list of temples and other church sites and events can be found at http://www.lds.org/locations?lang=eng.
