Hi friend. Thanks for your interesting question. The truth is that we know very little about life after death, though God has seen fit to reveal some limited details. We know that to progress spiritually together in the eternities, it is important that all family members make good-faith efforts to keep God's commandments, even when it's difficult. Through God's grace, those who make real efforts to follow Christ's teachings can be forgiven of their sins and made right with God.
It seems likely that in some cases some family members will choose to live in a state of eternal contentment rather than a state of eternal progression (the "terrestrial kingdom" vs. the "celestial kingdom" in Mormon-speak). I suspect that those who end up in different kingdoms will still be able to visit each other, though their spiritual progress will not be coupled.
All this is, of course, only speculation, given that, to my knowledge at least, God has not revealed any specifics regarding this question. I hope this answer helps.
