Hi. My family used to go to the Mormon Church twenty years ago. We were all baptized, including myself. But I’m a lost soul now. I lost my connection with the church simply because my father Geraldo cheated on my mom, and he had gone to church ever since he was young. He was even a missionary. But when there was that betrayal, we all left the church, even my brothers. We left the church because everyone in our ward knew about what had happened. I used to be happy, but my father Geraldo, because of his sin, destroyed that happiness. Today I see the church totally differently. I sent them a letter, but they never answered me. Now I wonder if God even exists.

I feel for you. I too lost contact with Christianity 20 years ago. Of course your father's unfaithfulness will have affected you and your family badly. You mention leaving because everyone knew what had happened. Maybe you or your family felt angry, ashamed or embarrassed. It might comfort you to know in our ward there have been divorces, and people falling away from the Church for a multitude of reasons, and I suspect this will be true for most wards. Only God is perfect, people fall far short which is why we need the atonement of Christ so much. The Church is not your father, and your father is not the Church. The Church belongs to Jesus Christ. Your future happiness need not depend on your father, you have agency, a choice, as to where to find happiness. Your Heavenly Father wants you to be happy, and he has laid down the Plan of Salvation to guide you back to a sense of peace. You are not a lost soul; there is more rejoicing in heaven over the one lost sheep that the 99 who never strayed. You have already made the first step of writing a letter, and posting here. Please talk through your concerns by contacting a missionary either by requesting a visit or chatting online. Knock and the door will be opened.
