I am about to join the church and the missionaries dropped off a question sheet and want me to answer them they will come back for the answers. One question asked if I have had an abortion. I have ask God for forgiveness and on top of that I am ashamed about and I do not want to tell anyone about it. Do I have to discuss this terrible time in my life? This is very personal and painful. I would never do that now I was not thinking right. DeVon

Dear DeVon,

I understand how difficult this must be for you. I was in the same situation before I joined the Church - and I was really upset that I had to answer this question. But, I found that the people asking the questions were so kind, so understanding and so gentle with their questioning that it was much easier than I had anticipated. They just need you to understand the serious of the step you're taking and how that past action could never be repeated. The intention is NEVER, NEVER to make you feel horrible about the past. Everybody makes mistakes - even the people asking the personal questions.

Be honest. Be straight-forward. Tell them what you explained in your question. There is no sin that is beyond forgiveness and your Heavenly Father knows that forgiveness is vital for every human being walking the face of the planet.

I felt very good after the interview - and wonderful walking into the baptismal font - there was nothing standing between me and my Heavenly Father. Just don't be afraid - they are there to love and understand - not to condemn in any way, shape or form.

I hope this helps - blessings and best wishes.
