Hi friend. I'm happy you posted your question here. Your confusion is understandable, since there are some polygamists who erroneously call themselves "Mormons." However, they are no more members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints than Baptists are members of the Catholic Church. Any member of the LDS Church that is found to be practicing polygamy is excommunicated.

Clearly there are times when God permits polygamy. The Old-Testament prophets Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were polygamists, and I think all agree that they were righteous men. There was also a time (130 years ago) when some true Mormons practiced polygamy too. However, God made it clear in 1890 and again in 1904 that He did not want the members of His church to practice polygamy any more. Mormons abandoned polygamy a very long time ago, and today, given our values and morality, Mormons are among the most monogamous people on earth.

There are some rumors going around that Mormons believe you have to be a polygamist to get into heaven. Obviously, since Mormons reject polygamy, this rumor is not true.

I hope this answer helps you. I really love being a member of the LDS Church. It's helped strengthen my relationship with the Savior Jesus Christ. I hope you find the same joy in His church.

I assume you're already chatting with the missionaries and visiting the Church to see how we worship. If not, please don't hesitate to visit us any Sunday morning (9:00). Mormons love visitors.

Polygamy played a factor in our church in the early days, but in the 1890's the Lord spoke to Wilford Woodruff (the prophet at the time) and told him that polygamy was no longer needed. This was known as the Manifesto. Polygamy is no longer practiced in our religion, in fact anyone caught practicing polygamy who is a member of the church is ex-communicated.

You might be interested in the Church's official standpoint on polygamy, written in 1890.

All the OTHER sects that practice polygamy are not associated with our Church
