Tithing is a way to show God that He is first in our hearts.
Hi friend. I'm happy you're thinking about joining the LDS Church. You can definitely continue to go to church without paying tithing. Anyone is welcome to worship with us. I'm sure the members of your congregation will be happy if you continue to attend meetings with them.
Baptism represents a bigger commitment, however. When we're baptized, we agree to dedicate ourselves entirely to God. This includes doing our best to keep all of God's commandments, including, among many others, paying a full and honest tithe (Malachi 3:8-10).
If you're currently having financial difficulties, you might want to chat with your bishop. The church has a whole host of programs to help those who are in financial need, including employment centers to help find jobs and bishops' storehouses to provide other kinds of temporary relief.
Keep in mind also that God has taught that tithing is always 10%, regardless of salary. (That's what the word "tithing" means!) There was one year, when I was a student, that I made no money. Since 10% of $0 is $0, I was a full tithe payer that year, even though I gave no money to the church. Perhaps you're in a similar situation?
