Hello, I have been quite interested in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for quite a while now, and have been researching a lot. I have been wondering though, about the LDS opinion of Mary, mother of Christ. I have not been able to find an answer, and although I would love to talk with a missionary, my family is not fully supportive of my interest. It would help a lot if you could explain. Thank you, Curious and Confused

Hi Curious and Confused. I'm happy that you're interested in the LDS Church. I've been a member for many years and really love being Mormon! Mormons face challenges just like everybody does, but the spiritual peace I've found in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ has helped me face life's challenges. I always get excited when other people express an interest in the Church because I've seen Christ's gospel transform many lives for the better. Given your family challenges and your interest in speaking with the missionaries, I could put you in touch with some Mormon missionaries who could teach you online through Skype if that would be more convenient. Let me know if you're interested; I'm happy to help.
We believe the Bible is the Word of God, His sacred revelation to ancient prophets and apostles.
Mormons believe that Mary was an extremely righteous woman, a woman so pure that she was worthy to bare the Son of God. The Bible relates that Mary was "highly favored of the Lord" (Luke 1:28) and that Jesus loved her so much that one of his dying concerns was for her welfare (John 19:25-26). She was even worthy to be present at Christ's ascension into heaven following his resurrection (Acts 1:14).
Mormon scripture provides additional insights into Mary's purity beyond what is found in the Bible. Revelations recorded in the Book of Mormon describe Mary as "a precious and chosen vessel" (Alma 7:10).
Mary has also been praised in modern Mormon publications, such as these twoarticles published in the Church's official magazine, the Ensign.
While Mormons do not worship or pray to Mary, she is for us the finest example of virtuous womanhood, an example to be followed and a woman to be honored.

We find in the Book of Mormon and ancient prophet, Nephi's, account of his vision of Mary. As found in 1 Nephi 11:
"8 And (the angel) said unto me: behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the son of God, after the manner of the flesh.
19 And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the spirit; and after she had been carried away in the spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: look!
20 And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.
21 And the angel said unto me: behold the lamb of God, yea, even the son of the Eternal Father!"
I feel that Mary need be compared to the prophets in importance of our Heavenly Father's plan, for we find another ancient Book of Mormon prophet Alma, describe her thus in Alma 7: "He shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God."
We revere Mary as we do Moses, Abraham, and Isaiah. We do not worship them, but we hold them in higher honor as those living their lives worthy enough to be used as instruments in the hand of God.
Hope that answers your question and may I also suggest that if you can go to mormon.org and talk online to a missionary, you may be able to set up some lessons at a member's house or at your local church perhaps.
