I was recently baptized and I love the gospel. It has changed by life. I’m a nutritionist, so when they talked about the Word of Wisdom I was really interested. I received the Aaronic priesthood. But things seem to be changing now. I recently lost my job and was not paid money I was owed. I needed a little help, so I asked my Mormon brothers to buy some pamphlets that I’d created about nutrition. I just wanted to get some money to continue studying and to further my career. But they turned their backs on me. Now I’m thinking about joining another church! What should I do?

Hugo,

Hi Hugo. I'm very sorry to hear that you lost your job. Unfortunately, with the recent worldwide economic troubles many people are struggling to find work. In many stakes of the church there are employment specialists to help people find work. You may wish to speak with your bishop to see what resources are available in your area.

I believe you may have misunderstood the intentions of your fellow congregation members. I've worshiped in many different Mormon congregations, and in my experience Mormons are very giving and kind. Typically members of the church don't use their mutual social connections to sell things, though, so I think the other members of your congregation may have been confused by your request. Usually when someone is in need, the congregation helps, if resources are available, through the church welfare program or through the perpetual education fund. I encourage you to visit with your bishop or branch president. I think it would be very helpful for the two of you to discuss your recent disappointment as well as your financial troubles.

While I suspect that your disappointment is the result of a misunderstanding, it is nevertheless certainly true that members of the Church are not perfect. It is, frankly, concerning to me that you would contemplate abandoning the restored gospel of Jesus Christ so quickly after first receiving it because of mere social concerns. If every time I went to church the members of the congregation spat in my face, I would still go every Sunday, because I don't go for the people. I go because Jesus Christ has restored his ancient gospel in our modern days. I go to fully benefit from the apostolic authority available only in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I go to partake of the sacrament and to remember Christ's sacrifice. I go to honor and worship Him. The friendships I've made in the Church are beautiful and valuable to me, and I'm certain that you'll form wonderful friendships as well in time, but I don't go to Church because of my friends. I go because of Jesus Christ.

I'm certain that you'll develop a similar testimony if you're persistent and diligent. That testimony seems already to be growing within you, since you said that you do like the church and that you do recognize that it's changing your life. It's hard for some new members to adjust to the Mormon culture, which like all human cultures is imperfect, but don't let that culture prevent you from receiving the wonderful blessings that can be found only in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. If you patiently persevere, I'm certain that spiritual peace will be yours! You're only now beginning the journey.

I would first like to commend you for being baptized. You have made a great step in your life. I promise you that you will never regret it. I understand how you feel buddy. Satan knows you, he will do anything to keep you away from the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Right now I am preparing to serve a full time mission. I have been waiting a very long time for this. Just a few weeks ago, my dad has passed away. I am only 19. I know Satan didn't cause this accident, but he sure is using it to his advantage. I guess what I would say to you is don't let Satan take advantage of you. He knows you are one step closer to the kingdom of God, and he wants you. He will use these things because he knows he can. I would pray to God before you join another church. You know by now that God will give you an answer because he has already by you being baptized, so I know he will be here to help you in this situation as well. God speed my friend.

I'm sorry to hear that life is treating you rough. Part of God's plan is that sometimes he tries out faith so show us how great we really are.

I invite you to ponder and ask yourself, "Did Abraham consider leaving God and the church when he asked Abraham to sacrafice his miracle son, Issac?" I mean God already promised Abraham seed as the number of sands upon a sea shore. Then at age around 150 (and his wife nearing, if not over, 100) what is God doing here going to provide another miracle baby? As it is recorded didn't reason the whole thing out and doubt, he obeyed without hesitation as did Issac.

Issac trusted his dad even when he asked him to climb up on the alter because 'God has commanded me to sacrifice you' (read your scriptues- no tale of Isaac resisting).

Abraham has complete faith that God is not going to keep his promise. Perhaps they didn't understand what was going to happen, but they didn't question, just trust.

I am a disabled, deaf and brain impaired, 33 year old and I went in this morning asking my bishop about my gaining employment. He didn't list all the reasons that I sometimes list as to why I'm not employable, but he simply gave me phone numbers for the church's employment, local ward and stake contacts for a email list for employment opportunities. There are also available through the church training services for job placement, resume building, interview etiquette and the like so you can become employed.

Again I am sorry that things went the way they did with your local church, but if you are looking for work leaving the church is probably the worst thing you can do right now.

Why did you decide to get baptized? Think back on the missionary discussions and the spirit witnessing of the truth to you. If you don't feel that occurred, go to our Father in prayer in the name of Jesus Christ and counsel with him for another sure witness if you desire it.

I can testify to you that God hears our prayers and knows you better than you know yourself. He does and will hear your prayers and will grant unto you answers in unmistakable ways if you listen.

You are a child of God and you are here now on this earth and were found missionaries acting in full authority to preach to you. You heard and chose baptism. God sent messengers to you because he wants you back for your own sake as well as his ability to rejoice over your return. Christ gave his life for you to be forgiven of any and all sins, and you will live again because of that. When you partake of all the blessings God's church has to offer you, you will be called up one day and crowned with great glory in the celestial kingdom, joint heirs with Christ. The church is true and fleeing when the heat is turned up a little bit isn't the way of a man of God.

Get in and seek council from your bishop, tell him what you are feeling and thinking, and through him seek for a job and some help to move forward. Continue to pray, be believing, and see also D&C 90: 24 as follows: "Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted... Good luck brother. We all get a few bumps on this road, get up and start moving again.
