I’ve passed through some very difficult moments when I didn’t even feel like I could read the scriptures. I begged God to give me strength to continue because I was very sick and because of my sickness I even thought about killing myself. I remembered a friend I used to have in the church who taught me about God’s love. Through him I learned to love God. Unfortunately, I fell in love with this friend of mine but he already has a girlfriend. What do you suggest I do? I want to go to church again, but I don’t want to bother anybody or to feel bad. Should I go to a different Mormon congregation?

Hi Valentina. I'm very sorry to hear that you've had such a hard life. I was particularly troubled to learn that you've given serious thought to suicide. I recently wrote an article entitled "Are You Suffering from Depression?" that might be able to help you. Depression is a serious condition that can be fatal. I strongly encourage you to get the spiritual, psychological, and medical help that you need.

I think it's excellent that you want to come back to the church. Spiritual development should be an important part of your recovery from depression. Another article I wrote, "Are you an Inactive Member of the Church? Come Back!", might also be helpful. Why don't you request a visit from the missionaries so they can help you return to full church activity? I'm sure your bishop would also be happy to help.

It would be best to attend the chapel affiliated with your neighborhood, but if you're terribly uncomfortable in your home congregation perhaps you could attend a different chapel. You can learn the address of other chapels in your neighborhood on the Internet.

I hope you feel better soon, Valentina! I'm so happy you've decided to come back to the church. I know God will bless you with greater peace and personal guidance as you strive to become an active member of the Church once again. Good luck!
