I’m in love with a guy but I’m very worried because he’s going to go on a mission this year. I have a lot of questions and I’m worried that when he comes back he won’t be interested in me anymore. I still don’t know exactly what country he’s going to go to. I love him a lot and he said that he wants to get back together with me when he comes back. But I feel like I don’t believe in religions right now. Of course I believe in God, just not religion. It’s because of certain experiences I’ve had. But the thing is I really worry about our future relationship and I’m very sad that he’ll be gone for so long. Please help me.

Mormon Missionaries
Missionaries in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil.
Hi friend. I know you're worried, but in time you'll realize that having a boyfriend who is currently serving a mission is a great blessing. During his two years of missionary service, your boyfriend will mature into a capable, spiritual man. He'll grow closer to the Lord Jesus Christ, and that spiritual strength will make him a better person. Missionary service is great preparation for marriage.

While your boyfriend is away, he'll be growing spiritually. It's very important that you grow spiritually as well so you two will still be well matched when he returns. Invest in your own spiritual development while he's away. I'm sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with organized religion in the past, but it's time for you to get over those feelings and move on. If you were accidentally shocked while unplugging your toaster, would you then stop using electricity? Religion is just like that. One bad experience should not keep us from taking advantage of the tremendous spiritual power that organized religion can provide. This is especially true of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Christ's restored church in our modern days. With all due respect to those who consider themselves "spiritual but not religious," a vague sense of spirituality, so common nowadays, is simply no substitute for religion. Spirituality can help us feel good, but religion can transform our lives. Your boyfriend's life will be transformed as he serves his mission. You need to transform your life as well.

I'd like to invite you to speak with the Mormon missionaries in your area. As your boyfriend has perhaps explained, there are over 50,000 volunteer Mormon missionaries in the world. They spend their time looking for people who are sincerely interested in transforming their lives. Fortunately, it's now possible to request a missionary visit online. Since your boyfriend has not yet left on his mission, I'm sure he would be happy to help you learn more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ as well. May God bless you as you contemplate making this important transition in your life.
