I’ve fallen in love with a mormon woman. I really like her. I’m a catholic, but not practicing. She’s talked about her religion a lot, and I like it. When I told her how I feel about her, she said she liked me too, but, for religious reasons, thought it best not to date. After talking with her, I decided to learn more. I’ve been visiting with the missionaries, and I like what they’re teaching me. I know it’s not a good idea to get baptized just because I like this girl. What do you think my chances with her are?

Hi friend. I'm very happy to hear that you have fallen in love with a wonderful person. As you probably know, Mormons believe that if their marriages are performed in the temple by someone with the correct authority from God, those marriages can last forever, even after death. I don't know for sure what your friend is thinking, but perhaps she wants to have an eternal marriage and so would prefer to marry someone of her own faith who can take her to the temple. I hope you understand her feelings. I'm sure she doesn't think you're a bad person; in fact, it seems she thinks you're a very good person. :)

I think it's excellent that you are investigating the church. You are right in thinking that it would be a mistake to be baptized just because you like a girl. Baptism should be the symbol of a true conversion; one should only be baptized when God has truly touched his heart. Perhaps, though, God is touching your heart already. I've been a member of the church for 20 years, and it has been a great blessing in my life. I've learned more about my Savior Jesus Christ through the church; I've learned to love Him with all my heart. I hope that you can find the same joy in the church that I have found.

Maybe your friend will be interested in dating you once you prepare yourself to take her to the temple. On the other hand, maybe she will still not be interested for reasons not related to religion at all. Regardless of how things work out with her, I have no doubt that you could find many blessings in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Continue to go to church, read the Scriptures, and to pray to God asking Him what you should do. May God bless you as you make an important decision that could change your life for the better.
