Hey Jude. Congratulations on your decision to join the church! I love being Mormon. Life is full of challenges for all of us, but when we have a firm faith in God, we have an eternal perspective that helps us find comfort. I have found just that kind of spiritual peace as I've learned more about Jesus Christ through His restored gospel. I hope the Church can help you too!
I know sometimes people are too shy to talk about religion, but you must understand that most good Mormons love to share their faith, especially with people like yourself who are seriously considering joining the church. We'd all love to help you! :)
I recommend that you start by visiting with the Mormon missionaries. They can explain the basics of the church so that your decision to join will be well informed. I've also written an article entitled "How can I Join the Church?" that you might find helpful. Do let me know if you have any additional questions as you investigate the church. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.
Or ignore everyone who is telling you your friend is a "bad mormon" and talk to her. I no longer believe in 'bad mormons.' :)

I would look up a meeting house, go there and be invited in, or call any number listed for the ward (congregation). Usually this is a number for the bishop. Talk with him and tell him how you feel. I'm sure he can, if nothing else, get a person to contact you.

Now days it's easier than ever to join the LDS Church because many needed resources are available on the Internet. For example, you can request a visit from Mormon missionaries online. You can also get the address of the Mormon chapel nearest your house online.
