I’m Mormon, and I recently heard some minor Mormon-history trivia that I had never heard in Church. What’s the deal? Is the Church intentionally trying to hide its past?

The Church is not a historical society. It's not the job of any church (Mormon or otherwise) to teach its members the detailed minutia of its history. Churches exist to bring men and women closer to God. While they may comment on their own histories in an attempt to accomplish that goal, they are not in the business of detailed history teaching. If you have never heard some detailed minutia of Mormon history, that is not the Church's fault. If you are interested in the details, you have the responsibility to research them for yourself, from reliable, academic (not anti-Mormon) sources.
