Mental illness is a serious problem that can have both spiritual and psychological consequences. Mormon leaders (typically bishops or branch presidents) can meet with the mentally ill to try to help them overcome their spiritual challenges, but they are not qualified to help them overcome their psychological challenges. Thus, in addition to caring for spiritual needs, bishops and branch presidents may (and in many cases should) recommend a good psychologist/psychiatrist. In some cases of financial need, the funds of the local congregation may be used to pay for part of the cost of the psychologist visit.

The Church is very supportive in the treatment of mental illnesses, so much that we have a social services and licensed counselors that help the members.
