LDS African-American Affairs Fireside
by -If you happen to live in the Los Angeles area, an LDS African-American affairs fireside will be held tomorrow (12 Sept) at 7 pm in the Los Angeles Stake Center: 1209 S. Manhattan Place, Los Angeles (Pico & Western). According to the organizer, “This will be a time of testimony and fellowship centered upon BYU’s law school encouraging black candidates to apply. It will be a worthwhile evening even for those not interested in law school because of the networking and friendships formed there (I met my wife at one of these in 2007). These firesides are sponsored by the LDS African-American Affairs Council of Los Angeles, which in turn is supervised by the LDS public affairs office on the LA temple grounds.”
Featured speakers include:
- Marguerite Driessen: BYU law professor and Relief Society President of Genesis Group in SLC
- Andre Bennin: BYU law student and regional chair of the National Black Law Students Association
- Danielle Jones: BYU law student, finalist in the 2010 National Black Law Student Association Negotiation finals, and featured in episode of the generations project
The law school’s dean of admissions, Carl Hernandez, also will speak. Information about other legal careers will be available, such as serving as a paralegal or a notary public.
Among those also attending to offer information and mentoring are the presidents of the Los Angeles and Orange County chapters of the BYU Law Society.
Dale Wight will also describe a magazine he’s developing for LDS converts, their families, and their friends, as well as an upcoming book that describes his wife’s experiences as a recent African-American convert and his own “home-grown” experiences that led to his conversion.
I’m very happy to see the African-American Mormon community is so active in Los Angeles! Keep up the great work! 🙂
