Urgent! Help Fight Online Pornography!
by -Friends,
An extremely important battle in the war against online pornography and crime is being fought right now, and few people are even aware of it. ICANN, the non-profit organization that regulates the Internet, recently received a petition to create a new regulatory body called the CyberSafety Constituency. Without violating the free speech and anonymity of any Internet user, the CyberSafety Constituency would try to enact regulations that would protect Internet users from viewing objectionable content that they don’t want to see, including content related to crime and pornography.
Have you ever accidentally stumbled into a pornographic website? I think it happens to a lot of people. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were an extra layer of protection built into the Internet so that only those who really wanted to see pornography could access it? That’s just one of the many regulations that the CyberSafety Constituency could enact. Currently, the interests of families, children, victims of cybercrime, religions, and cultures are not well represented within ICANN. We need to do something to protect our children and ourselves from child pornography, hardcore obscenity, cybercrimes, and online predators.
Before approving the CyberSafety Constituency’s petition, ICANN has invited the Internet community to comment. No comments will be accepted after April 5th, 2009, so please, please send your comments to cyber-safety-petition@icann.org right away. Most of the comments of the last few days have spoken out against the petition, and it may be rejected if we don’t act now to speak out in its favor. You can also learn more about this petition and can see the comments that have been posted thus far. And please, recommend this page to your friends so they, too, can take a stand against crime and pornography on the Internet.
