All About Mormons

Recently, the LDS (Mormon) Church has decided to oppose the legalization of homosexual marriage in California. The Church recognizes that the grand social experiment of the past 50 years, in which the traditional family has been constantly redefined, has failed. For this reason, the Church objects to continuing efforts to redefine an ancient social institution. It’s just as important, however, to recognize what the LDS Church is NOT saying:

1. The Church is NOT saying that those with homosexual feelings are inherently sinful or evil. The Church recognizes scientific findings that suggest that in most cases homosexual feelings come from the complex interplay between genes and the environment, not a conscious choice.
2. The Church is NOT saying that those with homosexual feelings cannot be Mormons. As long as homosexuals do not act on their tendencies, they can be active, participating members of the Church. I’ve heard of one “gay Mormon” who has faithfully served in a bishopric and a stake presidency. I believe that even those homosexuals who choose to act on their tendencies are free to visit the Church, though Church membership is usually withheld.
3. The Church is NOT opening the doors to increased mocking and persecution of homosexuals. Any mocking and persecution runs contrary to God’s will. Certainly, violence against any group is unchristian.

There are some prominent homosexuals who have decided to leave the Church. Some of these are very vocal in expressing their negative impression of the latter-day saints. We should not make the mistake of assuming that their views represent the views of all Mormons that struggle with same-gender attraction. I estimate that there are about 30,000 less vocal, active, participating “gay Mormons.” Many of them have made tremendous sacrifices in order to remain faithful latter-day saints. Sexual feelings can be very strong, yet these are wiling to forgo satisfying those feelings because of their love of God. They should be honored as the Christ-like examples that they are.
