My great-grandmother was a mormon, the only one in our family. I have a vague memory of her telling me one time that she had someone baptized on my behalf. That sounds like baptism by proxy, but I thought that was only done for the dead. I was very young, so I may not be remembering this correctly. So my question is, can a person be baptized by proxy BEFORE the person dies, either to cover them in life or after death? Thanks! ~Lori

Hi Lori. Much thanks for your question. I think you must be misremembering what your great-grandmother said. You're correct in thinking that proxy baptisms are only performed for our ancestors who have passed. Living people must always be baptized themselves, without any proxy.

If you ever want to learn more about your great-grandmother's faith, I encourage you to chat with some of our missionaries. They'd be happy to explain our basic beliefs in greater detail.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. I'm happy to help.

No, proxy baptism is only for the dead
