Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide gather twice yearly for what they call general conference.
Hi, Debbie! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believes that mental illness is a real health condition that, as with any illness, can happen to wonderful people through no fault of their own. We believe that professional treatment and medication can be absolutely necessary, and that looking down on someone for receiving those is as silly as criticizing someone for taking antibiotics for an infection.
Like a Broken Vessel
One of the most valuable talks I have found on the subject is "Like a Broken Vessel" by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. I invite you to read it. Here are a few of the things he says:
-However bewildering this all may be, these afflictions are some of the realities of mortal life, and there should be no more shame in acknowledging them than in acknowledging a battle with high blood pressure or the sudden appearance of a malignant tumor.
-So how do you best respond when mental or emotional challenges confront you or those you love? Above all, never lose faith in your Father in Heaven, who loves you more than you can comprehend.
-Until that hour when Christ's consummate gift is evident to us all, may we live by faith, hold fast to hope, and show "compassion one of another"...
I pray that the love and grace of the great Healer, Jesus Christ, will continually comfort you! Yours is a great challenge, but I know that you can beat it! That may not mean it will ever go away in this life, but that you can still live big and share your greatness to inspire others!
Francisco Rubio: Perfect answer, John. I also can't recommend "Like a Broken Vessel" enough. In my opinion, it's one of the best General Conference talks given in the last 10 years.
