Book of Mormon Anachronisms

by Vicente Cruz's Neighbor -

Note: A friend of mine recently studied alleged Book of Mormon anachronisms. Some people claim the Book of Mormon cannot be a historically accurate document because it supposedly mentions things that didn’t really exist at the time or place described. The actual facts aren’t nearly so clear cut.

We believe the Bible is the Word of God, His sacred revelation to ancient prophets and apostles.

The number of items considered to be anachronisms (ie: horses, cattle, oxen, sheep, swine, goats, elephants, wheels, chariots, wheat, silk, steel, iron, etc) in the Book of Mormon has been steadily declining over time. For example, in 1842 the idea that steel swords existed in ancient Jerusalem at the time of Lehi was laughable. Now, such a sword is on display at Jerusalem’s Israel Museum.

Below are some easy-to-digest video sources on the subject, with emphasis on “horses.” Lots more to show if needed… Much deeper/more scholarly sites and sources are available.

Anachronisms in the Book of Mormon Prove it a Fraud?

Horses:

New Evidence for Pre-Columbian Horses (this is a long video but REALLY interesting).

Note: “Horses” in the Book of Mormon where never said to be ridden upon or used for warfare. They didn’t necessarily “act” like horses. They could have been some sort of “horse” as we know it, or they could have been some other sort of animal. The existence of the word “horses” in the Book of Mormon doesn’t prove or disprove the Book of Mormon.

Wheat and Barley:

Silk & Linen: http://mormonchallenges.org/book-of-mormon-6-silk-and-linen/

There is still much evidence to be had and there is EASILY a lot of room for a faithful belief in the Book of Mormon despite any “weakness in writing” by Joseph Smith and/or the family of Lehi.

If you know ANYONE who is seriously struggling with this stuff, I’m more than happy to help. I’ve been DEEP down the rabbit hole of critical arguments against the church more than once. Believing/faithful answers exists for ALL the critical arguments against the church. Ultimately, however it is still the spiritual influence and confirmation of the Holy Ghost that will win over the individual regarding spiritual things, if their desires are pure. Faith is needed. Religion, of any type, can never be proven 100%. I don’t believe God wants it to be proven beyond any doubt. God wants/requires our faith relative to obedience…etc, etc.
